Hidden toilets - Surgeons' Hall Edinburgh

Up the ornate winding staircase, that finishes with a circular balcony looking back down to the beginning and onwards into the dining hall at Surgeon' Hall in Edinburgh.

Built for the late and the great surgeons of the north this grand upstairs dining hall seemed to lack nothing. Vast decorative  cornices, austere portraits of previous occupants and a large domed central ceiling. Prestigious, authentic and imposing. The only problem arose when the waiter told me the loos were back down the winding staircase. Just at that moment a friend whispered there's a red door at the top of the stairs, winked and walked off. Thinking this could be a wind-up I approached with caution, but sure enough there was a wonderland narnianesk small red door and inside, just for those distinguished male surgeons, a very quirky men's urinials. The picture taken is of the rather special piece of push-button flush plumbing found inside.

Actually if you are up in Edinburgh Surgeons' Hall is well worth a visit, with museum and great grounds.
