The lap of Lakes luxury at Scalehill

The first visit to Scalehill Cottages in Loweswater in the North Western Lake District did not disappoint. Greeted by a basket of goodies, Heather the owner really looks after you. We had shied away from our more frugal abodes as a family member was limited at fell walking and so we were bound to be around the property more. Sheila's House provided a fantastic lounge, north of the border woven covered sofas a large open fire and very high spec modern kitchen. All this made missing the fell walking easier to bare.

Stunning views of Low Fell from the house and the outdoor dining area (we did actually have 3 BBQ's in August!) and stunning views of Whiteside, Grasmoor and Mellbreak from the large garden.

The usual regular visit to the Kirkstile Inn and many samples of there award winning ales. This really is one of the best kept secrets in the UK. Maybe it's the lack of cafes and gift shops - which once you go over the Whinlatter Pass is 0. But Loweswater is the gateway to some of the most breathtaking walking action anywhere and it's totally unspoilt.
